Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan) Episode 1 Review

Shingeki no Kyojin episode 1 is finally here, and I can confidently say that it did not disappoint!

Shingeki no Kyojin

Shingeki no Kyojin

This is probably going to be one great anime.

If you watched the preview of Shingeki no Kyojin in my earlier post then you already have a pretty good picture of what episode 1 is like.

The humans were becoming content with living within the walls, only for disaster to strike.

An extremely huge titan (around 60 meters tall) seemed to fall from the sky, before proceeding to break the outer-most wall (which is called Wall Maria) (who names walls? Seriously?) and create a hole in it for the smaller titans to pass through (I say ‘small’, but these titans are giant-size beings, around 10 meters tall maybe).

Eren (the protagonist) and Mikasa (Eren’s adopted sister) then watched in horror as their mother, who they couldn’t save, was cruelly eaten by a titan.

From here on you can probably guess what the story-line will be like: Eren swears to revenge his mother’s death…Eren’s father also dies…Eren becomes vengeful…Eren then proceeds to join the Recon Corps…Mikasa also joins the Recon Corps to protect Eren (and to keep the promise she had made to her mother)…Eren trains hard and becomes good…Eren kills a couple of titans…Eren starts to learn the truth about the titans…Eren faces off with the extremely huge titan…

(NB: The above are in NO WAY an indication of what lies ahead in the future episodes! They are just the predictions I’d make about Shingeki no Kyojin based on only the first episode.)

Well, if you’ve read the manga then you obviously know what lies ahead in this anime…

***Spoiler Alert***

Eren eventually finds out that he can temporarily transform himself into a titan.

Unlike what I’ve stated earlier, Eren’s father doesn’t die, he actually disappears (it still has the same effect though).

The humans did try to regain control over Wall Maria by fighting off the titans, but their attempt failed miserably. The number of casualties that resulted from this attempt was immense.

*** End of Spoiler***

Oh, and how cool is the 3-D Maneuver Gear? (the device that helps the people who fight the titans move around quickly and swiftly).

All in all, I’d give the first episode an overall rating of 8.5/10.

Can’t wait for episode 2!

A preview of Shingeki no Kyojin.

Genre: Fantasy, Action
Producers: Production I.G., WIT Studio
Release date: Saturday, April 6th 2013

Several hundred years ago, humans were nearly exterminated by titans. Titans are typically several stories tall, seem to have no intelligence, devour human beings and, worst of all, seem to do it for the pleasure rather than as a food source. A small percentage of humanity survived by walling themselves in a city protected by extremely high walls, even taller than the biggest of titan. Flash forward to the present and the city has not seen a giant in over 100 years. Teenage boy Eren and his foster-sister Mikasa witness something horrific as the city walls are destroyed by a colossal titan that appears out of thin air. As the smaller titans flood the city, the two kids watch in horror as their mother is eaten alive. Eren vows that he will murder every single titan and take revenge for all of mankind.
